Who Are You Without the Roles? How to Rediscover Yourself After People Pleasing

Who Are You Without the Roles?

If I asked you to tell me about yourself...

What would you say?

Your job? Your relationship status? That you're a mom? That you're the one everyone depends on?

Most of us answer that question by describing the roles we play.

But what happens when those roles change?

Who are you then?

That question changed my life.

The Week Everything Changed

Within the span of one week, my marriage ended, I left the career I'd built as an occupational therapist.

My Instagram account was hacked.

Almost overnight, everything I'd been using to define myself disappeared. For the first time in my life, my usual answers no longer worked.

I wasn't someone's wife. I wasn't introducing myself by my career. Even my online identity had been taken over.

Instead of asking, "What should I do next?"

I found myself asking something much deeper.

Who am I?

Why So Many Women Lose Themselves

The truth is...

Most women don't lose themselves overnight.

We lose ourselves one role at a time.

We become the helper, the caregiver, the people pleaser, the high achiever, the dependable one.

None of those roles are bad.

But when our worth becomes attached to them, we forget that they're simply things we do.

They're not who we are.

Your Identity Isn't Your Resume

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is this:

Your roles are temporary. Your values are not.

Because jobs will change. Relationships change. Children grow up. Bodies change and seasons change.

But the things that matter most to you - kindness, curiosity, honesty, growth, connection, compassion - those become the thread that carries you through every transition.

When you begin making decisions from your values instead of your titles, life feels much more aligned.

The Practice That Helped Me Come Home to Myself

During one of the hardest seasons of my life, I found myself returning to my yoga mat every single day.

I did not have the answers, and I didn’t know what tomorrow would look like. All I knew was that 20 minutes on my purple yoga mat everyday, gave me space to hear my own thoughts.

One phrase kept coming back to me.

Sat Nam.

In Sanskrit, it means: Truth is my identity.

That simple reminder changed the way I saw myself.

Instead of trying to become someone new... I began remembering who I'd been underneath all the expectations.

A Simple Meditation Practice

One of my favorite ways to reconnect with yourself is something I call the Three D's.

Drop

Let go of everything you've been carrying today.

Drop the expectations, your to-do list, and the labels.

Drift

Allow yourself to simply notice. When thoughts come in and you want to chase them down the rabbit hole, simply observe them and let them drift on by like clouds in the sky.

Observe your breath. Observe your body. Observe your thoughts without needing to fix them.

Dream

Ask yourself:

"If fear wasn't making this decision...what would my future self choose?"

Instead of forcing answers... Listen.

Your intuition often whispers long before your mind catches up. Get curious about what your soul may be trying to say to you.

A Different Way to Answer "Who Am I?"

Instead of asking yourself:

Who am I?

Try asking: What do I value?

What matters most to me?

What kind of person do I want to be?

Those answers don't change nearly as often as our circumstances do. They become the compass that guides every chapter of your life.

Reflection

Take 60 seconds before you keep reading.

Without mentioning your career, relationships, or responsibilities...

Finish this sentence:

I am someone who values...

Ready to go deeper?

If you're navigating a season of transition and want support reconnecting with yourself, I'd love to help.
